Therapy for Individuals with Cognitive & Developmental Disorders

Individuals with cognitive and developmental disorders experience emotional challenges similar to those of everyone else. However, the psychological and emotional challenges that these individuals face are often misunderstood or overlooked.

Some issues that can be addressed in therapy:

  • The need to be understood
  • The need to belong
  • The need for love and acceptance
  • Self-confidence
  • Social Skills
  • Anger, Anxiety, or Depression
  • Sexuality
  • Grief and Loss
  • Trauma
  • Behavioural Difficulties

Changes can be made to the therapeutic environment to ensure that the therapy is appropriate, including:

  • The inclusion of a caregiver or an individual who knows the person well (with the consent of the client)
  • An emphasis on trust building and ensuring the client’s comfort
  • The use of clear and concrete language
  • The inclusion of active and interactive techniques for those with limited expressive language
  • Flexible methods
  • Increased processing time for the client
  • Sensory considerations, such as decreased lighting and stimuli
